Our society continues to advance towards technology, but that doesn't mean we still can't pick up a paper copy of a book and read for pleasure. Here are 5 pleasure reads, that I believe should be on every high schoolers MUST read list.
If you are a conspiracy theorist, or just like books about aliens, this is a perfect book for you. This book by Rick Yancey follows Cassie Sullivan and Ben Parish in the apocalyptic world, when no-one can know for sure who is human, and who is alien. This book is suspenseful, full of action, and has some romance stirred in making it a great read for high schoolers.
2. I am Number 4 by Pittacus Lore
Another alien book (can you tell what I love to read yet?). This book follows Number Four, or rather John Smith (his alias). When he was young, his planet was destroyed, so he and 17 other aliens (8 his age, 9 their mentors) from his planet ventured to Earth for safety from the Mogadorians, who can only hunt them in order. Number one is dead. Number two is dead. Number three is dead. He is Number Four and he is just now developing his powers.
3. The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Another MUST read. This book follows Thomas, and that's all he can remember. His name is Thomas, and the rest is a mystery to him. He woke up in what James Dashner calls "The Box", on his way to the Glades, where people just like him (with no memory) have been living for years. Surrounding the Glades is the Maze, the only way out, and Thomas must decide if he has the courage to become a Runner, and venture out.
4. The Hunger Games by Suzzane Collins
When this book first came out, it was disliked by many, but since then has become a great, enjoyable read. In the future, people are separated into districts 1-12, and the people in the capital. Katniss Everdeen is from district 12, and when her sister's name is called for the Hunger Games (where 2 people from the 12 districts fight each other til only one is left), Katniss volunteers in place of her sister. She can only hope that she has the skills to survive the Hunger Games, and make it out alive.
5. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
McManus's book takes place in high school with 5 teens in their senior year. When they all end up in detention one day, and one of them is murdered, the police begin to wonder whether or not this is just some random coincidence. All 4 kids in detention happened to have their secrets on the verge of being spilled onto the internet by the victim. They all had a motive. In this book, everyone is lying, but does that mean that one of them killed the boy in detention... or did it? Did they do it all as a team? Or were they just guinea pigs to keep the real reason behind the murder a secret?
These are only 5 reads, but they are guaranteed to pull you in to the very end. Each and every read above is part of a series, that you are for sure to get hooked to. Happy reads everyone!
